Schools and Education

Charleston is home to that singular privately funded military and educational institution, The Citadel. The city also offers more general forms of post-secondary educational opportunities at Charleston Southern University, the College of Charleston, Charleston School of Law, The American College of the Building Arts, Johnson and Wales University, Limestone College, the Medical University of South Carolina, Roper Hospital School of Practical Nursing, Southern Wesleyan University, Springfield University, Trident Technical College, and an extension campus of Webster University. The College of Charleston, founded in 1770, is the oldest college in South Carolina, and the thirteenth oldest in the United States.

The public primary and secondary schools are mostly administered by the Charleston County School District, though a few are Berkeley County schools. Private schools include many administered by the Diocese of Charleston, as well as Charleston Day School, Porter-Gaud School, and Ashley Hall.
